WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF DALITS!

Dalits, which forms about one fourth of India’s population, make 4% of the World’s Population. This is a size bigger than 72% of 189 countries of the world. The Dalits form the largest block of the ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’, surely a daunting challenge, but an opportunity of unbound promises. Given the size of the Dalit community, their tradition of untiring labour, creativity and craftsmanship, they are powerful ally in unlocking India’s potential to become world’s ‘Numero Uno’ economy, creating unlimited wealth and a double digit growth.

National Confederation of Dalit Organisations (NACDOR) is the apex body of Dalit Organisations in India. NACDOR is committed to an inclusive, progressive, secular, democratic and non-sectarian society. While firmly believing in equality, social justice and equal dignity for all, NACDOR promotes democracy, human rights, sustainable development and peace and reconciliation with the perspective of the socially excluded Dalits.

INITIATIVES

RIGHT TO EDUCATION

Shiksha Adhikar Yatra is an innovative method that mobilizes community, which has remained unreached or indifferent to the education. The Shiksha Adhikar Yatra bring the schools, their environment, and habitation of the children as common agenda for all - the parents, community, teachers, school administration, village education committees and local self government and the state government - all working towards ensuring quality education of socially excluded children.

FAIR SHARE

NACDOR advocates for FAIR SHARE to the Socially Excluded in India’s Economy. The FAIR SHARE means the economic resources fairly distributed. NACDOR with its positive attitude and solution based approach engages with the private sector organisations and their associations with a win-win approach. This approached has helped NACDOR and the Private Sector both in breaking the impasse between the Private Sector and the Dalit Community.

RIGHT TO LIVELILHOOD

In 2006, when National Rural Employment Guarantee Act was notified for implementation, the then Uttar Pradesh Government viewed this as a programme of the ruling party at the Centre. While the poor Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Most Backward Classes received the law with enthusiasm, the Government attempted to decry, discredit, and dismantle this hard-won entitlement. Rozgar Adhikar Yatra challenged this attitude of the Government.

BATTLE FOR BUDGET

It is often said that put money where mouth is. In 2001, when National Confederation of Dalit Organisations looked at the publication 50 Years of Planning Experience: A Statistical Profile published by the Planning Commission of India, it was noticed that this was not the case with the Dalits, Adivasis and other socially excluded sections in India. NACDOR initiated its cry Battle for Budget and every year present its demands to the Government.

ERADICATE POVERTY

Dalits and socially excluded remained obsessed with identity, stigma, atrocities, discrimination, and violation of human rights. Poverty hardly figures in their socio-political discourse. As a result, how poverty contributes in maintaining status quo or status considered inferior in the society, largely remained under-explored. NACDOR’s Blue Badge Campaign seeks the attention of the state and non-state actors to eradicate poverty of the Dalits.
